Since 2016 I’ve been teaching private guitar and performance lessons. As a professional musician who has worked over 10 years full time as a performing artist, session player, producer and songwriter my goal has always been to offer engaging lessons and provide transferable skills that I use every day. I take what I've seen work for myself over the years, techniques I would have used from the start, lessons I’ve learned from my peers in the industry, and methods I’ve seen work with past students to find an approach that best suits each student and their specific goals.
Technique and Theory have undeniably guided me in achieving a career in the music industry. While I like to stay away from the monotonous “by the book“ approach and make sure to keep enjoyment at the forefront of my lessons, I make sure to include these building blocks for students to grow as musicians. I have taught for the Toronto based “Little Jammers” which is a program teaching full classrooms at elementary schools, as well as the Kingston based Long & McQuade (formerly Renaissance Music) summer Rock Camps and Rock Academy programs which focused on smaller group lessons in a band style setting. I have taken courses at Metalworks Institute, studied theory at an advanced level to gain admission to the Jazz Performance - Guitar program at Humber College, and have done a variety of my own private lessons over the years from teachers such as the award winning jazz guitarist Rob Tardik. With a large part of my learning being self taught over the years I also love working with students to pinpoint their specific learning style and lean into that from my experience of what’s been successful for myself and my peers in the past!
I mainly focus on teaching intermediate level guitar lessons (acoustic or electric) for musicians looking to get to the next level in their playing, but also work with advanced students on more specific targets, as well offer very broad and easily applicable lesson programs for students just starting out. All students are welcome! I’ve been very fortunate to work with folks of all levels over the years. My influence comes mainly from Blues, Pop, Reggae, RnB and Rock but have played in various collaborations over the years that have let me play a huge variety of other genres, including some years in metal bands for all the shredders out there 🤟 Some examples of the content that I offer exploring during lessons with me are:
Singing while playing & Live performance coaching
Playing to a metronome for recording and playing in bands
Ear training, reading chord charts, building a personal practice routine
Fingerstyle, Flatpicking & Alternate picking technique
Theory & how to use it in your playing
Building a personal practice routine that sticks
Learning covers & making them your own
Songwriting fundamentals, Nashville # system, Chord substitutes
Chord shapes/Voicings & Knowing your fretboard
Improvisation, Breaking through plateaus, Lick transcribing
How to record your own songs and guitar parts
Tone and Effects development
And much more!
Students of any age or skill level are welcome, and group lessons are also an option. Every person is different in their goals on the guitar and how they learn so the aim is always to work within that as a teacher! I currently live in Kingston Ontario and am available to either offer lesson space in my private home studio, travel to your home or do virtual lessons (Zoom, Skype, Discord etc). My lesson rates start at $25/half hour or $45/hour and I am flexible to work around a schedule that’s best for you!
